Protest Classification and Kelly and CLaire’s first Europa Cup races in La Molina, Spain

February 1, 2010

Kelly has presented for protest classification before her first Europa Cup races in La Molina, Spain.

On January 26th, Kelly was re-classified as B3 and consequently competed in both Giant Slalom and Slalom races in the Spanish resort. Kelly’s classification status remains under review and she will be required to complete a confirmation classification.

Unfortunately, on the first day of their races, in windy conditions, Kelly crashed on the first run of the Giant Slalom and so the Girls didn’t achieve a second run. This was disappointing for both girls, who have been eager to put their training into practise and may have led to a psychological disadvantage for the slalom event where Kelly showed uncharacteristically slow skiing in their first run, some 15 seconds behind the leader, Anna Cohi of Spain. In the second run, Kelly and Claire skied better but were placed 6th overall, just over 20 seconds behind the eventual winner, Anna Cohi.

This has been a trying time for the girls, they had returned home to Northern Ireland and Scotland from two months training in the USA, only to travel two days later to Spain for classification and competition. They are however, relieved to be eligible to race again and very thankful for all the support they’ve received during this difficult time. Kelly was lucky enough to have her parents in Spain to support the team as they raced.

This has been the first time since the Hintertux pre-season training camp that the Girls have had the opportunity to train with their coach Jane Stevens and the girls were also lucky enough to enjoy some time with their US NSCD team mates. Claire enjoyed a night in Barcelona before returning to Scotland.

The classification news has put Kelly and Claire’s season back on track and they await to hear if their performance over the last six months has been sufficient to be chosen by ParalympicsGB to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the squad for the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.
